There's No Fish in Lake Michigan is a short documentary exploring salmon's surprising presence in Chicago and the communities, industries, ecology, and history surrounding it. This project was a co-production with Allegra Hatem and Joshua Silver, with all of us working in every position throughout the production process.
Materials: Teamwork. Communication. Sony PXW-X70. Archival videos. YouTube videos. Shotgun microphones. Lavaliers. Interviews. Expository + observational + poetic documentary modes.
Note:
In There's No Fish in Lake Michigan, we talk to the Chicago fishing crew the Salmon Nightmares, visit the Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery, hang out with some nighttime anglers, interview Dan Egan (author of the bestselling book The Death and Life of the Great Lakes), and go ice fishing. If 20 minutes is too long for you, my favorite part is the ice fishing segment in Jackson Park (15:38-19:05). I was also the primary cinematographer and editor for that part, so I’m a little biased.
